The Rusinko Jazz Orchestra is made up of professional
musicians, who are friends and colleagues of the late Emil Rusinko, who founded this
ensemble 25 years ago. Many of the current players performed with Emil a good portion of
that time. The group rehearses twice a month, and thoroughly enjoys the fellowship of the
members, and the experience of performing the best big band arrangements available today.
Among the arrangers are Kenneth Farrar, who wrote a majority of the charts in our
repertoire, and our dear friend and mentor, the late Hank Levy, who also attended and
conducted many of our rehearsals over the years. We lost both Hank and Emil in 2001, but
we keep their spirit alive as we continue the “Big Band Legacy” they have left
us. We, therefore, dedicate this CD to their memory and hope to continue performing and
recording for many years to come.

Al Patacca, who has played lead
and solo trumpet with the bands of Glenn Miller, Buddy Rich, Harry
James, Les Brown, Don Ellis, Louie Bellson, and Baltimore’s own Hank
Levy, led his own orchestra throughout the 1990’s playing various dances
and jazz concerts around the Baltimore area. Among the works featured by
the band are those of Hank Levy, who also conducted the band on many
occasions. The band also had the honor of performing with vibes great,
Terry Gibbs at the Tilghman Island Jazz Festival.

Ken Ebo, a very talented jazz trombonist and
vocalist, is a member of the U.S. Marine Corps, and has his own big
band. This incredible CD was recorded at the third annual Toys For Tots
Concert, which Ken has sponsored at Christmas time the past three years
for the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. It features many of the members of
the Hank Levy Alumni Band and includes several arrangements featured on
the Stan Kenton Christmas album. No jazz collection should be complete
without this wonderful collection of holiday favorites.

The Hank Levy Alumni Band is comprised of professional
jazz musicians who have matriculated through Hank’s tutelage in performing,
composing, arranging, and anything connected with the field of jazz. We are all here out
of total respect and admiration for this musical legend, and to passionately participate
in the challenge of his exciting music. Our professional careers have all been greatly
enhanced through our exposure to Hank’s genius, and the knowledge & experience we
gain from it. This recording was made at Oak Crest Village in Baltimore, MD, where Hank resided. We feel fortunate to have had such a prolific composer to learn from, right here at home. All of the music was arranged by Hank, and tracks 7, 9, and 10 were also composed by him. Tracks 1.

Hank Levy was one of the most prolific,
creative writers in the world of big band jazz, and his claim to fame was his use of
“odd” time signatures. Exploring this field along with Don Ellis and Stan
Kenton, he wrote many compositions and arrangements for them, greatly enhancing their
repertoire, and keeping them on the cutting edge of jazz innovation.

life was recently produced by Dick Slade of Audio Visual Artists Productions in Silver
Spring, MD. Many of the performers here are also in the video. If you enjoy this music,

Hank has long established himself as one of the jazz world’s most innovative & exciting big-band composers and leaders, and an inspirational educator as well. His use of exotic time signatures, recorded by the Stan Kenton and Don Ellis orchestras, brought him worldwide recognition. His colorful life is chronicled in this production, filled with emotional recollections, “road stories”, and insightful, often humorous, commentaries from Hank, himself, and close to 50 other people, whose lives Hank has enriched. appear in these clubs was the Admirals. With various personnel changes over the years, the band always maintained the highest level of professionalism and musicianship.
